Information to read before obtaining a marriage license
• Blood tests are no longer required in the State of California.
• License is valid for 90 days. Ceremony must take place within 90 days of purchase.
• Minimum age requirement is 18 years.
• Valid photo I.D. required. (Drivers license, State issued I.D., passport, etc.)
• If either applicant has been divorced or had an annulment within the last year, a copy of the FINAL DECREE OF DISSOLUTION is required before issuing a license.
• Both applicants must apply together.
• Licenses cannot be issued by mail.
There are two types of marriage licenses issued in the State of California.
• Public Marriage License – is public record, anyone requesting a copy or information on the record will be given it. This license can be used anywhere in the State of California.
• Confidential Marriage License – becomes a confidential record, the only people able to obtain information is the bride and groom except under certain circumstances. The requirements to obtain this type of license are:
1. Bride and Groom must be living together prior to the marriage.
2. The ceremony must be held in the county where issued.

Orange County
To purchase a marriage license and/or have a civil ceremony performed, please go to the Old County Courthouse at 211 West Santa Ana Boulevard in Room 201. It is the large red brick building.
Hours: 8:30 – 4:30 M-F
Parking: The closest and least expensive parking is available behind the Old County Courthouse. The entrance to the parking lot is off Civic Center Drive. The lot is metered and parking costs $1.00 per hour. There are other pay parking lots throughout the Civic Center. For directions go to:

The Norwalk Facility is open 8 a.m. - 7 p.m. on the 3rd Thursday of every month. Please be in the office no later than 6 p.m. for same day service. You must present your application to the cashier no later than 4p.m. to obtain the license on the same day. The processing time is 1 hour. For same day services we recommend that you be at the office by 3 p.m. $70 for a regular license and $70 for a confidential license. Payments can be made in cash or by check or money order. If paying by check, valid identification i.e. driver's license of the signer is required and must be presented at time of request.
